 CMM Level 5 companies

It is STPI's endeavor to provide you with information, however, it is necessary that the information presented is not misused.

Due to certain misuses, which have come to our attention, you are required to read the following disclaimer thoroughly each time before viewing this list.

Please scroll this Web page down to read all the statements.

Purpose

The intent and purpose of providing this list is as follows:

To demonstrate use of the models and appraisal methods developed by the Software
  Engineering Institute (SEI)
As a public service to the engineering community to assist in their improvement efforts
Any other use or perception of this list is outside the scope of this intent and will
  not be supported.
Simply put, this is nothing more than a list of organizations who have publicly
  announced their maturity levels.
After the organization's announcement was made, a representative from the organization
completed a form to be added to this list.

What this List can not be used for

This list can not be used as some form of certification or verification by the organization
listed as proof of their maturity rating
This list can not be perceived as an indicator of all or an exact count of organizations in
in the world that are using SEI models or appraisal methods
To restate this in another way, this list can not be used to determine exactly how many
companies there are at the different levels and who they are
An all inclusive list that has a high degree of accuracy (meaning every organization in
the world using SEI models and appraisal methods are accounted for) simply does
not exist to our knowledge and the SEI has no intent to provide support for such a task
In all cases, you should consider performing an evaluation appraisal if you want
to verify an organization's maturity rating.

About Certification

The terms SEI certified and CMM® certification are simply incorrect since there is no such thing.

The SEI does not certify organizations and can not because it is a federally funded
  research and development center
The SEI only licenses and authorizes lead appraisers to conduct appraisals
The SEI nor any other organization is a "certifying authority" of the results from an appraisal
The SEI does not confirm the accuracy of the maturity levels reported in this list
The SEI does not use information stored within its Process Appraisal Information System
nor any other information obtained in confidence to produce this list

About Verification

The main intended goal and purpose of the models and appraisal methods developed by the SEI is for self improvement. The outcome, which is entirely dependent on the organization that follows these practices, is to raise the level of quality of the products developed with a better ability to predict the time and budget needed to develop the product. The goal focuses less on a perceived business advantage and more towards the ability to reliably develop products in a repeatable fashion with continual improvement versus doing the same in a chaotic state.

For most models developed by the SEI there are two basic appraisal methods:

For Self Improvement
For Evaluation

The second can be performed by an organization, if they wish, for source selection and verification of another organization's appraisal results/maturity level.

Maintaining a certain maturity status is a continuous process. Therefore once a certain level is reached, appraisals are still necessary to know if the maturity is being maintained over time.

Organizations who wish to be placed on this list:

Must first publicly announce their maturity level in a "publicly distributed" article.
A correct statement to use in a press release is that "the appraisal was performed by an
SEI authorized lead appraiser". An incorrect statement would be that the "organization is SEI
  or CMM certified".
The organization must then volunteer to complete the Web form (see below) and provide
the name of the "publicly distributed" article (publisher, publication, article title, page
number, date of article) and the company AND division name of the organization.

Definition of "publicly distributed" articles:

Information which has been released into a public forum
The material can be seen by and can be obtained by anyone outside of the given
  organization or corporate area
Information has been released in a non-proprietary document. Examples: Web site,
press release, IEEE Software, CrossTalk, etc.
